"Taking Action Together - Across Every Culture, Every Dementia Journey."

What is Dementia?

Dementia is not a normal part of ageing. It is a group of conditions that affect memory, thinking, language, behaviour, and daily life — changing how the brain processes information, communicates, and responds to the world. But behind every diagnosis is a person with a story, a culture, a family, a faith, and a community. Dementia doesn’t discriminate. It affects people of every culture, language, and background, yet in many multicultural communities it becomes a silent struggle, hidden behind tradition, expectations, and stigma. Families may interpret dementia as “just ageing,” “forgetfulness,” “stubbornness,” a test of patience, or something to keep private. Many delay seeking help because they fear judgment, feel guilty asking for support, don’t know where to turn, or cannot find services that understand their language, faith, or cultural needs. But caring for our elders was never meant to be carried alone. While honouring our parents is deeply rooted in many traditions, the emotional and physical weight of dementia can overwhelm even the strongest families.

Our Mission

Dementia Action Groups Incorporated is an incorporated not-for-profit organisation dedicated to building dementia-friendly communities through education, advocacy, collaboration, and community action.

Founded from lived experience, we believe no one should face dementia alone—regardless of their culture, language, location, or circumstances. We understand the challenges that dementia brings and are committed to ensuring individuals, families, and carers feel supported, informed, and connected throughout their journey.

We bring together people living with dementia, carers, families, health professionals, volunteers, local councils, businesses, and community organisations to create practical, community-led solutions that increase awareness, reduce stigma, promote inclusion, and strengthen support across Australia.

Our vision is to empower local communities to take action by establishing Dementia Action Groups that reflect the unique needs of their region while working together as part of a growing national network.

Although we are now an Incorporated Association, our heart remains the same. We are powered by volunteers, guided by lived experience, and driven by the belief that lasting change happens when communities come together to support one another.

How We Help

Support

We’re here to help our community feel supported and connected every step of the way. Our groups offer information, guidance, and pathways to local services for people living with dementia, their carers, and families. From friendly check-ins to shared resources and social gatherings, we aim to ensure no one feels alone on their journey. Together, we’re building a caring network rooted in empathy and understanding.

Education

Knowledge empowers change. Our education programs and workshops help people better understand dementia and how to support those affected by it. We offer sessions in English, Spanish, and Arabic to ensure everyone can take part. Through interactive learning, shared stories, and practical tips, we’re breaking stigma, raising awareness, and inspiring our communities to take positive, informed action.

Advocacy

We stand for the rights, dignity, and visibility of people living with dementia. Dementia Action Groups work to raise awareness, influence change, and ensure that the voices of lived experience are heard in local decision-making. Through partnerships with councils, services, and community networks, we advocate for dementia-friendly policies, environments, and opportunities that truly make a difference.

Empowering voices and driving positive change.

Wellness

Community

A healthy mind begins with a healthy lifestyle. Our wellness initiatives focus on brain health, physical activity, and emotional wellbeing — supporting both people living with dementia and their carers. Through outdoor programs, creative activities, and community connections, we encourage prevention, resilience, and balance. Every action we take nurtures the mind, body, and spirit — helping our community live well at every stage of life.

Nurturing brain health, balance, and wellbeing for all.

Community is at the heart of everything we do. We bring people together through regular meetings, events, and local collaborations across our regions. By working closely with councils, organisations, and volunteers, we create opportunities for connection, inclusion, and shared action. Every step we take together helps make our community more dementia-friendly, understanding, and compassionate.
