Blue Mountains Dementia Action Groups

Support & Connection in the Blue Mountains

We are a group of passionate individuals dedicated to creating a community where everyone feels welcome, supported, and heard. Our mission is to provide a safe space for people living with dementia and their carers to connect, learn, and advocate for a better future.

Why Our Work Matters

Dementia is now the leading cause of death in Australia, and its impact on our local community is significant:

  • Locally in the Blue Mountains: It is estimated that over 1,500 people are currently living with dementia in our region, a number projected to grow by 70% by 2054

  • National Impact: There are more than 433,000 Australians living with dementia today, supported by approximately 1.7 million carers.

  • The Need for Connection: 2 in 3 people with dementia live in the community. Our goal is to ensure they can do so with dignity and support.

What We Do

Our meetings are a blend of education, support, and community action:

  • Expert Guest Speakers: We regularly host specialists to share insights on health, well-being, and dementia care.

  • Community Advocacy: When we aren't hearing from a speaker, we work as a group to identify local challenges. We brainstorm and implement practical solutions to make the Blue Mountains more Dementia Friendly.

  • Carer Support: 75% of carers report being physically or emotionally impacted by their role. We provide a space to share experiences and find strength among peers who truly understand.

Join Us

We meet on the first Thursday of every month. We invite you to come along, have a chat, and be part of our growing community.

  • When: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

  • 2026 Start Date: February 5th, 2026

  • Where: Lawson Mechanics Institute

Please read carefully: If you put the Highway address (384 Great Western Highway) into your GPS, you may end up stuck on the highway unable to park!

To find us easily:

  1. Set your GPS to Orient St, Lawson.

  2. Turn off the Great Western Highway into Orient St (near the Lawson lights and skate park).

  3. Turn right at the second little lane called Yaleena Avenue.

  4. Go almost to the end of Yaleena Ave—you will see our signs and parking on the right behind the hall.

Looking Ahead

Exciting things are coming! Starting in 2026, we will be incorporating specialized workshops into our program. Stay tuned for more updates as we expand our support services.

Help Shape Our 2026 Workshops

In 2026, we’ll be hosting a series of dementia information workshops designed as a safe space for people to ask health-related questions about dementia and the brain. We’d really appreciate if you could take a few minutes to complete this anonymous short survey, which will help us understand what questions matter most to the community. Your feedback will help shape the topics and focus of these workshops so they’re as useful and relevant as possible.
